Stereotypes in Ads



This first ad is for Budweiser beer. I see two stereotypes that are shown in the ad. I do not see that it counters any stereotypes. The first stereotype that I see is that a woman should serve the man. The man is just as capable of getting his beer as she is of bringing it to him.
                The second stereotype presented by the ad is that men are fixers. Women are capable of fixing things. There are also a lot of men who are not mechanically inclined and struggle to fix things. Stereotypes exist in this case.



The second ad I found depicts a stereotype as well. I do not see anything that would counter a stereotype. The ad is implying that only moms endorse this product. There are all kinds of people who use Clorox wipes. I am not a mom and have used them on many occasions.
                The ad also conveys that moms do all the cleaning. There are dads that use and I’m sure trust Clorox wipes to clean. This ad in a way continues that stereotype that cleaning is the job of a woman.


This ad shows the stereotype of using a sexy woman to sell a product. It could lead one to misinterpret that if they drink this milk, they could look like her. I feel it also is geared towards getting men to buy it. By using a sexy woman, it would draw the attention of male shoppers to buy this milk.
                I fail to see what showing a sexy woman has to do with selling milk. It is advertising that it has more protein and calcium. The woman in the ad does nothing to show that she is getting more protein or calcium.



This ad promotes a stereotype of sneakers being for men. Sneakers are worn by all people. The ad could be used to draw in all groups of people instead of just men. The ad doe not counter any stereotypes.
                I also see that this could be stereotyping people who cannot afford these shoes. The claim the ad makes implies that without these sneakers you might not be a man. That could be very hurtful to people who come from low income homes. It could also lead to unrealistic expectations about how to be a man.


This ad is full of stereotype. It seems the beer companies love to show stereotypes in ads. The woman is being stereotyped as belonging in the kitchen. The ad also implies she cannot cook. This is displayed by the burning dinner in the background and the husband’s remark.
                Men are just as capable of being in the kitchen and cooking. I know men that can burn food. She did not make the beer so of course she did not burn it. The ad would be better talking about the product instead of promoting stereotypes.

Can’t think how to get started? Just write the first thing that pops into your head. Anne Lamott, author of a book on writing we love, says that you need to give yourself permission to write a “crappy first draft”. Anne makes a great point — just start writing, and worry about editing it later.

When you’re ready to publish, give your post three to five tags that describe your blog’s focus — writing, photography, fiction, parenting, food, cars, movies, sports, whatever. These tags will help others who care about your topics find you in the Reader. Make sure one of the tags is “zerotohero,” so other new bloggers can find you, too.
